Course Description:

This workshop is an advanced course in performance hypnosis as entertainment for stage or street. This course is open only to those who have completed the Introduction to Stage Hypnosis course. Those who successfully complete the course and the competency demonstrations will receive Performance Hypnosis Certification from the International Applied Experiential Trance Society. Unlike other courses, this is not intended as a basic introduction but is aimed at actual performance experience. Previous instruction in hypnosis is not required. Participants will learn how stage hypnosis shows are structured and what the most common techniques and methods are for introducing the concepts of hypnosis in an entertaining way, how to select audience participants, suggestibility testing, waking suggestion, group hypnotic induction methods, instant hypnosis techniques for demonstration, group hypnotic effects, individual hypnotic effects, skits for performance, and post-hypnotic effects and how to use them for entertainment purposes. Audience and volunteer management, staging, and presentation will be covered. Participants will see a number of video examples of the subject and will discuss them in terms of hypnosis entertainment and critical performance. All of the techniques will be demonstrated and practiced. Students will learn to perform hypnosis with entertainment and performance in mind. The course handbook contains a number of valuable techniques as well as material specific to stage hypnosis not available elsewhere. In addition to hypnotic routine management, students will also learn some of the basic promotional techniques used by professional stage hypnotists. The combination of stage hypnosis frames and other performance arts such as magic and music will also be covered. In addition to being considered a top international trainer in experiential hypnosis, the instructor holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in communication and performance, making him uniquely suited to teach this topic. Those who complete this course who meet all other eligibility requirements are qualified to take the examination for a Specialization Certificate in Entertainment Hypnosis from the Society of Experiential Trance.

Teaching Methods:

This course is NOT intended as a lecture or passive learning experience. It is a very fast-paced and energetic program so students should come ready, willing, able, and eager to jump right in and run full speed ahead. The teaching methodology is very active. Students will learn through all of their sensory learning channels, particularly aural, visual, and kinesthetic . . . listening, seeing, and doing . . . as it is a practical applications competence course, there is a great deal of supervised "doing" with immediate and useful feedback. Typically, for each subject or technique, the training is within the following process model: 1. instructor briefs students on the topic, 2. instructor demonstrates technique with student volunteer, 3. the demonstration is then broken down into steps, 4. students then practice the technique several times with one another under guidance of the instructor with ongoing feedback, 5. class debriefs about experience and technique with performance notes from instructor, 6. students continue advanced practice (including homework for some techniques), 7. final debriefing with instructor. The course focuses upon competence and application of material. Unlike many introductory courses, everyone who faithfully participates in this course will become competent performance hypnotists. Do the drills and get the skills, so to speak. Students will be asked to work with classmates in pairs, groups, and as performance practicum.

The course is taught in English (English to Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese) interpretation is available only if a minimum of five persons sign up as a group requesting the service; please contact Lorraine for details).
