Course Description:

This seminar course is intended for experienced hypnotists who have previously had training or experience with hypnosis. Subjects covered are appropriate for those who already know the basics of trance induction, deepening, and giving helpful suggestions. If you are not familiar with or inexperienced in basic hypnosis processes, you should not take this course. This is the hodgepodge course of various advanced techniques specific to particular areas of interest. A variety of specialties and topics will be covered. Some of the particular areas to be covered include:

Instant and Rapid Hypnosis Induction Techniques

All participants are expected to be familiar with instant and rapid techniques for the induction of hypnosis. We will review what I consider the core imaginative suggestibility exercises and practice converting them into instant and rapid hypnosis inductions. We will also learn and practice creative inductions and improvisational induction sets. This section of the course is very fast-paced and very hands-on. For the rest of the seminar, we will use these rapid induction methods with the follow-through activities for more advanced topics.

Self-Hypnosis (Basic and Advanced Techniques)

Participants will learn a variety of methods for teaching self-hypnosis both to individuals and to groups. Class members will participate in group and individual inductions to learn what hypnosis feels like and how to enter the state themselves as well as how to describe the process to members of the public unfamiliar with trance. The instructor will use various imaginative suggestibility games to reinforce the state and demonstrate how to tell the difference between being in hypnosis and just being relaxed. The instructor will guide the students into hypnosis and then teach them how to use appropriate techniques to create powerful triggers so that they can guide others into learning how to enter into hypnosis anytime they wish. Once they can reliably re-enter self-hypnosis anytime they wish, the instructor will teach the students how to teach others to phrase suggestions for self-hypnosis to make them more effective, as well as the differences and uses of repeating and compounding suggestions. Following the Basic Self-Hypnosis Techniques to re-enter hypnosis and deepen the effects each time, the students will be taught more powerful Advanced Self-Hypnosis Techniques which allow the students to enter self-hypnosis with their eyes open and while otherwise fully alert. Students will also learn advanced autoquestioning techniques for instrospection and meditation using self-hypnosis such as pendulum questioning.

Experiential Trance Guided Imagery

Participants will learn straightforward techniques for using guided imagery for educational, therapeutic, entertainment, and recreational purposes. The focus of this topic will be on experiential guided imagery, a form of trance-based imagery that engages the senses fully within the imaginative experience. Participants will learn a straightforward three part structure from which imagery of any type for any purpose can be constructed. Participants will experience a number of experiential guided imagery processes as models from which a structure and critical process will be understood and then move on to learning how to create their own experiential trance guided imagery. The instructor has presented on this topic on numerous occasions to academic conferences on educational techniques.

Hypnosis Techniques for Students

Hypnosis, focused trance, and guided imagery are very powerful resources for the student. The techniques taught in this seminar can be used to lower stress and anxiety as well as to increase focus, concentration, and memory retention of material studied. Students will learn relaxation response conditioning, focused mind techniques, and context-based guided imagery methods for educational purposes. Participants will undergo a number of group and individual trance processes specifically designed for students. Prof. Phillips has written scholarly papers and presented on this material to academic conferences on cutting edge educational techniques.

Hypnosis for Sports Improvement

A major market for many hypnotists is helping folks improve their performance in sports, dance, or other physical skills. Participants will learn simple hypnosis and focused trance techniques to improve sports performance. Participants will learn how to model a superior athlete and create neuromuscular response patterns or behavior patterns based upon visualization and ideokinesis techniques combined with physical practice that have been shown to improve sports performance at an accelerated rate when compared to athletes who only practice without visualization or hypnosis.

Hypnosis Approaches to Stop Smoking

Smoking is the direct cause of a number of health problems for many people and is an indirect or aggravating cause of many more. A recent report in the United States found that "Smoking-related health-care costs run US$75.5 billion every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The price tag for lost productivity is an additional US$92 billion a year." Hypnosis has been found to be more effective than most methods commonly used by members of the public to stop smoking. In this workshop, participants will undergo group trance and learn a number of techniques to help them to stop smoking. Participants will not simply learn one process but will undergo and learn multiple techniques with hypnosis can be very powerful. Experience has shown that this type of multiple-modality approach can be much more effective than a single method alone.

Instructor:

The course is taught by Dr. Brian David Phillips, an internationally known and respected hypnosis practitioner, educator, author, and entertainer. He has taught numerous workshops and seminars on hypnosis, focused trance, and experiential hypnosis as well as a number of webinars (web-based seminars) on these and related subjects. Dr. Phillips is an associate professor at National Chengchi University.

Teaching Methods:

This course is NOT intended as a lecture or passive learning experience. It is a very fast-paced and energetic program so students should come ready, willing, able, and eager to jump right in and run full speed ahead. The teaching methodology is very active. Students will learn through all of their sensory learning channels, particularly aural, visual, and kinesthetic . . . listening, seeing, and doing . . . as it is a practical applications competence course, there is a great deal of supervised "doing" with immediate and useful feedback. Typically, for each subject or technique, the training is within the following process model: 1. instructor briefs students on the topic, 2. instructor demonstrates technique with student volunteer, 3. the demonstration is then broken down into steps, 4. students then practice the technique several times with one another under guidance of the instructor with ongoing feedback, 5. class debriefs about experience and technique with performance notes from instructor, 6. students continue advanced practice (including homework for some techniques), 7. final debriefing with instructor. The course focuses upon competence and application of material.

The course is taught in English (English to Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese) interpretation is available only if a minimum of five persons sign up as a group requesting the service; please contact Lorraine for details).

Course Materials:

Students will be supplied with handouts related to the presentation topics.

Please, students may not use recording devices during the course. However, the instructor will record the training.
